Default 64bit vs 32 bit

Under normal circumstances you only can use 32-bit with 32-bit hardware
and 64-bit is better optimized, so if you have 64-bit hardware, you
should use a 64-bit install.

If you have 4 Gigs of RAM or more, you may wish to go the 64 bit route.

If you are planning on using VSTs then perhaps stick with the 32 bit for
now.

Other than that there is not really a difference anymore. I have
both a 32 and a 64 bit install at home and I do not notice any
perceptible difference in stability or performance. (I have 3 gigs of
RAM in that system so both versions can make use of all available memory.

There might be advantages for 4 Gigs of RAM and more, when using 64-bit,
but there should be no troubles with less than 4 Gigs. I have 2 Gigs and
excepted of my MIDI problems, no troubles. 2 Gigs are enough RAM, there
is always RAM left and the swap is never used, when I run top.

You can never have enough RAM.

Yesno

for some Gigs you need self compiled kernels . I guess 4 Gig will be
very good and maybe 8 Gigs also are fine, but you can reach a border
where it becomes stupid, than you maybe better won't have more, but
better RAM, that is error correction code compatible. I'm not sure what
is possible, if you compile a kernel with special options, but I guess
it's 64 Gigs. What will you do with 64 Gigs of RAM in an audio studio
today? Doing the production in the RAM only? Be careful, I just had a
phone call with a friend, even if your computer has 2 power supplies
and is connected to emergency power, you better will have some data on
your HD, because it's more safe. He knows a server where both power
supplies failed.

Cheers,
Ralf
