I prefer KDE 3.5.x on my workstations, though KDE4 is poised to replace
that (I generally prefer the KDE4 versions of the apps I use, such as
krdc, gwenview, konqueror, the list goes on).
I also use XFCE on my netbooks (Acer Aspire One and an eeePC 701) with
ratpoison for giggles.
My DAW is a plain vanilla, whatever it ships with (a Gnome of some
sort). I do not use this machine for email or even regular browsing.
All of my OSs are Ubuntu based except for the 64Studio one.
In 64Studio all of the following are an apt-get (or aptitude install) away:
openbox
fluxbox
ratpoison
xfce4
In essence, they are all included, just not on the install CD.
