Default Question about installing 64Studio

hi all,
I have just subscribed to this list.
I am just downloading the v2.1 version of 64Studio.
Since I am visually impaired I rely on speech and or braille.
Does the installation CD contain the standard Debian installer?
Is BRLTTY included on the CD?
Best regards and thanks,
Christian

Yes, but with some values pre-seeded to make the installation simpler.

Is BRLTTY included on the CD?

We include the libbrlapi1 library but not the brltty daemon in the
install CD. We don't know what a Braille user really needs, and don't
have any Braille hardware for testing, but we'd like to help you. So if
you could let us know which packages would make 64 Studio installation
or usage easier for you, we'll add them to the distro.

Cheers!

Daniel

Hi Daniel hi Christian

Christian please let someone else install 64 Studio for you. It will be
an advantage for you, that you don't need to take care about the audio
problems and that you get GNOME running Orca by default.

For the future it would be better if Christian and all blind people can
do an install by themself.

For Suse the install seems to work with braille. Asking the people who
made the installer for Suse might not be a help, because the installer
for Debian seems to be too different.

Because Christian has got the needed hardware, he should ask the brltty
project, I added the links and also a link that describes a problem for
the Debian installer.

Maybe someone who has knowledge about Linux and who can speak English
very well can try to understand, what I don't understand.

http://mielke.cc/brltty/guidelines.html#install
http://mielke.cc/brltty/contact.html
http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2006/03/msg01035.html

Some Ubuntu users that don't need braille seems to be angry because of
problems during install.

A German link about this

http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/software-fuer-behinderte-menschen/

that links to a discussion on English

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-meta/+bug/39835

The links are old, but Etch is old too, that's why they might be actual
for the 64 Studio installer.

It's a pity that there is such a problem for the install, I'm sorry
Christian, I didn't know this, but maybe you can help the 64 Studio
people to get the knowledge to build a new installer.

If the braille device is an USB device brltty might be the wrong
choice,again a German link

http://www.mikrocontroller.net/topic/107964

Maybe it's easier to solve as it occurs.

It might be possible that the main thing is to include a kernel modul
for the installer's kernel, but the module seems to depend to the used
braille hardware, that not all the time seems to need brltty.

I could be completely wrong, because I not really understood what I was
reading.

Cheers,
Ralf

Default Question about installing 64Studio

Hi Christian,

That would be fantastic if you would be interested in including BRLTTY on the CD.

I'll open a feature request ticket for that right now.

What desktop is being used as default in 64studio? Is it Gnome?

That's right. It does have some features for accessibility support, but
it's hard for us to know how well they really work.

> if you would include the BRLTTY daemon so that you could type
something simular at the CD boot prompt:

install brltty=driver,port,translationtable.

We'll have to work out how to do that. It would be even better if the
Braille hardware was auto-detected.

Cheers!

Daniel

Default Question about installing 64Studio

Oops, I'm sorry, of all things the link, one on my first language has
nothing to do with braille. This is complete nonsense:

Default Question about installing 64Studio

Hi Ralf, Daniel and all others,
Ralf, BRLTTY supports USB braille displays without any problems. It can even auto detect these devices as well.
The devices it cannot auto detect are displays that are connected via a serial port. Then you need to specify these.
Orca is the screen reader for the Gnome desktop. However, I have tried it with several applications including Audacity, Ardour and Rose garden as well as Gnusound.
In Audacity the menus are accessible but not the preferences window. I have already reported this to the Audacity mailing list.
In Ardour I was able to create a new project but I had audio problems so didn't try it that much.
Rose garden is completely inaccessible.
Gnusound is also accessible when it comes to the menu system and the preferences window but I had sound problems with it as well.
For more information on Orca, visit:
http://live.gnome.org/Orca
For the console I have been looking at Ecasound, but haven't done much with it.
If you have any further questions, please let me know and I'll do my best to answer.
Just a comment, I have been using Debian Etch in the passed and it is possible to start BRLTTY at the CD boot prompt as I wrote earlier on.
BRLTTYs oficial homepage can be found at:
http://www.mielke.cc/brltty
Now I am using Ubuntu Hardy but willing to change to something else.
Best regards and many thanks for all your help,
Christian

Default Question about installing 64Studio

Hi Emiliano,
Thanks for your reply!
Yes, I've already got this link and it looks really interesting.
I have only looked a little at Ecasound and made a few recordings but
not much else.
I really want to switch to Linux when it comes to sound editing instead
of having to use that other OS all the time!

Best regards and thanks,
Christian now using Orca and BRLTTY!

Hi Ralf, Daniel and all others

Hi Christian,

I haven't followed the whole thread and I don't know if someone
already posted this link:

http://ltsb.sourceforge.net

It's a project called Linux Text Based Studio, by Julien
Claassen. He's a long time linux audio user and maybe he can help
you. He's visually impaired and produces great music on linux. You can
find his contact on that page.

Hope this helps,

Orca isn't able to read the quote.

Ralf now not using Orca and eSpeak en-uk anymore

Hi

I try to use Orca on 64 Studio 2.1 upgraded to Lenny running KDE.

It's very strange, if I write a short time I have to close Orca because
Icedove won't get all letters from the keyboard.

Even Orca itself isn't very comfortable.
I let my eyes opened, so that I can see the KDE . Before I clicked, I
didn't hear anything, after I clicked Orca said: "Starting Orca
preferences, this may take a while"
There isn't a voice any more, when I'm in the preferences Window.

I hope it's working better for you Christian.

Cheers,
Ralf
