This package contains the source code for the ALSA drivers.
The source code can be compiled into an alsa-modules package
using the m-a utility (available in the module-assistant
package). Please note that the kernel headers must be
installed to compile these modules. Please read the
README.Debian file for more information about loading and
building modules.

But why don't you use the 2.6.21-1 default kernel coming with modules
1.0.17?

Thanks a lot for help Ralf
I've tried compile my own kernel just because 64studio has generic kernel it is mean kernel suitable for many computers.
I was curious to a difference in performance with new kernel compiled exactly for my processor.
And mainly because I am curious :-)
I am just compiling my kernel without embeded alsa modules and then I will try to build them your way.
I'll let you how it was goiing.

Hi Mira

I compiled 2.6.24.7-rt17 for my 64 Studio 2.1 vanilla install, but
didn't compiled ALSA modules. I'm also running a 64 Studio 2.1 upgarded
to Lenny using the 2.6.21 kernel and Suse 11.0 using a kernel-rt 2.6.25.
There are no big differences for me. I just did it because I cant run
Rosegarden or MusE, no sequencer using ALSA MIDI clients seems to be fine.

You might run into dependency troubles, when compiling ALSA modules,
because the 1.0.17 source is from Lenny. 1.0.16 seems to be available
for 64 Studio 2.1 testing.

Good luck,
Ralf

Sorry, I'm wrong. Etch source is 1.0.13 and Lenny 1.0.17.
Modules for the 2.6.21 64 Studio kernel stable and testing are 1.0.17,
so I think you won't run into trouble, when using the source from

deb http://apt.64studio.com/backports/ etch-backports main

Hi

I was following /usr/share/doc/module-assistant/... README.Debian...
- Building with make-kpkg

$ cd /usr/src/
$ ta jxvf someproject.tar.bz2
$ cd /usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.9
$ make-kpkg --added-modules=someproject modules

And I obtained folder "modules" in my /usr/src with link "sound"
After reboot no sound.

Probably there is some next step needed.

Any advice?

mira

Hi Mira

I never did it, but I found a howto, maybe this will help you. Note: The
howto isn't for 64 Studio 2.1 and it doesn't use GRUB .
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/CompilingTips

I'm running my unstable DAW with a vanilla install of 64 Studio 2.1
64-bit, but with a second kernel.

The default kernel is:

linux-image-2.6.21-1-multimedia-amd64

I compiled:

linux-image-2.6.24.7-rt17-rev01

And there are only ALSA modules for the default kernel:

alsa-modules-2.6.21-1-multimedia-amd64 1.0.17

'Please note that ALSA driver modules are included in
kernel-image packages of version 2.6 or higher. Therefore,
you do not need to install an alsa-modules package if you
are running a 2.6 kernel. You may still want to install an
alsa-modules package for a 2.6 kernel because the drivers
in alsa-modules packages are usually more current than
those in kernel-image packages.'

How can I find out which version of ALSA modules is in the kernel image
package for my 2.6.24.7-rt17 included?

Because of the troubles with Rosegarden and MusE I should know this and
perhaps compile ALSA modules too.

Cheers,
Ralf

Hi Ralf,

-after experience I've got in last days I have to say 64tudio default kernel is good one, but on the other hand I learned quite a lot by trying new things.

-yes you are right alsa modules are included in new kernels, but version 1.0.15 which is good, but there is a bug for my card RME Digiface.

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=fmv935%24cls%241%40ger.gmane.or g

and there is another bug for compiling 1.0.17 alsa modules with new kernel

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=501417

This makes me wonder how 64studio's developers got 1.0.17(current stable) alsa in default 2.6.21 kernel .... hats off

-you can get info about your alsa like this:
#cat /proc/asound/version

-I really can only recommend to stay with default kernel for now it is really good one.

Cheers

mira

Hi Mira

/asound/version for the 64 Studio 2.6.21-1 says 1.0.16, only Synaptic
shows a package called alsa-modules... 1.0.17 as installed and my 64
Studio's kernel 2.6.24.7-rt17 also comes with 1.0.15. The latest Suse RT
is 2.6.25.16-0.1-rt, using 1.0.16rc2.

I tested 2.6.21-1and 2.6.25.7-rt17 with 64 Studio running 2.1 and
2.6.21-1 running 64 Studio Lenny, but ALSA MIDI isn't fine. I also
tested 2.6.25.11-0.1-rt with Suse 11.0 and ALSA MIDI isn't okay for it
too. I hope I'll have better luck when testing ALSA MIDI and also JACK
MIDI with Suse's 2.6.25.16-0.1-rt.

At the moment I can't recommend any LINUX kernel to use with MIDI. The
Linux kernels seems to be not fine for many motherboards, independent if
they are AMD/ATI or Intel based.

Thank you for the informations.

Cheers,
Ralf

A typo, for 64 Studio it is 2.6.*24*... and not *25*.

Hi Ralf,

sorry for inaccurate info. I have been tired. Alsa modules are really 1.0.16 for 2.6.21 64studio kernel.
But anyway this kernel working fine for me( not bug with Digiface card).
I am quite curious what is your problem with Alsa midi. Actually I didn't use midi on linux very much till now.
If you describe to me how to test it I can try it here.
I will let you know how is it working on my hardware.

Cheers

mira
