Default solid-state drive (SSD)

Hi all,

have anybody here experience with this kind of disks with 64studio or other distro?
I consider to buy new notebook within a year and I hope that the prizes will be acceptable for SSD quite soon.

Cheers

M.

I use one every day in my Acer Aspire One. It shows up just like any
other ATA/SATA storage device. I am using XUbuntu on this laptop and it
was detected by the alternate (non-gui, non-live) installer. Not sure
what you are looking for exactly. It stores and retrieves data as you
would expect. The performance is comparable to other hard drives.

For my DAW I still use regular hard drives, the price per GB is an order
of magnitude better for standard drives. If you are intent on spending
money you may be better served with the 10k RPM drives.

Hi Gustin,

Out of curiosity, could you run:

sudo hdparm -Tt <devicename>

on your SSD please? You might get slightly different results if you run
the test two or three times.

For sure, although if you are backing up your projects to other storage,
that's not such an issue. The power consumption should be a great deal
lower for the SSD.

Cheers!

Daniel

The device is a Samsung P-SSD1800

/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 1194 MB in 2.00 seconds = 597.27 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 104 MB in 3.02 seconds = 34.40 MB/sec

The results were +- 15 MB/sec for cached read throughput, and +- .3
MB/sec for buffered disk reads over several iterations.

A quick bonnie++ test (using the -r 250 -s 500 flags as I only have 1.2
GB of disk free and 1.5 GB of RAM)

Anadtech was really happy with the performance of the Intel SSDs.

It was the price per GB that I was focused on. For me at least, there
needs to be a lot more movement of the cost before it becomes
compelling, especially in light of the disagreement out there about the
actual power savings.

Hope this is useful,

Thanks for running those tests, the performance is not that far behind a
full sized Seagate 80GB PATA disc from three or four years ago. I will
benchmark the miniature drive in the Indamixx and my laptop's disc for
comparison.

Cheers!

Daniel

Hi Gustin,

you've answered nearly to all my questions. :-)
I was mainly curious about the overall performance compared to common disks especially when system is installed on it,
extended working time on batteries, usefulness for DAW and also if there are some issues on linux.

I have to say that I was waiting that SSD will win more clearly in many aspects.

>>It was the price per GB that I was focused on.

If I understand well your "Samsung P-SSD1800" should be the cheaper disk?

Can you send reading/writing alleged by manufacturer speeds please?

Thanks for reply

Mira

Hi Daniel,

I'm looking forward to result of your tests ... :-)
You have a system installed on SSD or using it just like storage?

Cheers

Mira
