A Live DVD installer might do the trick... or a new installer kernel.

Comment:

I've upgraded the installer kernel to the latest Hardy update release
(08.04.2), it should sport support for most recent SATA controllers.
Marking the ticket as closed, but feel free to re-open it if needed.
